New York-Style Pizza

 New York-Style Pizza

New York-style pizza is an iconic American dish that has earned a legendary reputation for its large, thin, and foldable slices. Originating in the early 1900s with Italian immigrants who brought the tradition of Neapolitan pizza to New York City, this pizza quickly evolved into its own unique style. It is known for its chewy crust with a crispy edge, typically cooked in a deck oven and often sold by the slice in pizzerias across the city. The slices are usually wide, with a thin base that's sturdy enough to hold various toppings but soft enough to be folded in half, which is the classic New Yorker way of eating it.

The secret behind its distinctive flavor and texture is often credited to the high-gluten flour used in the dough and, some claim, even the minerals in New York City tap water. The toppings are generally simple: a light layer of tomato sauce, a generous helping of mozzarella cheese, and optional additions like pepperoni, sausage, or vegetables. Unlike other styles of pizza that may focus heavily on exotic toppings or gourmet preparation, New York-style pizza emphasizes balance — a thin yet satisfying crust, a tangy sauce, and melted cheese all working together in harmony. This classic style features prominently in many beloved food recipes, celebrated for its straightforward yet flavorful approach.

New York-Style Pizza Recipe

Ingredients:

For the Dough:

  • 4 cups bread flour (plus extra for dusting)
  • 1 ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

For the Sauce:

  • 1 can (15 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

For the Toppings:

  • 2 cups shredded whole milk mozzarella cheese
  • Additional toppings (pepperoni, mushrooms, onions, etc.), optional

Instructions:

1.   Make the Dough: In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix and knead the dough for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1–2 hours until doubled in size.

2.   Prepare the Sauce: In a saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Sauté garlic until fragrant. Add crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 15–20 minutes, then let cool.

3.   Assemble the Pizza: Preheat your oven to its highest temperature (ideally 500°F/260°C) with a pizza stone or baking sheet inside. Roll out the dough into a 14-inch circle. Place on a pizza peel or parchment paper. Spread a thin layer of sauce, sprinkle with mozzarella, and add desired toppings.

4.   Bake: Slide the pizza onto the hot stone or baking sheet. Bake for 8–12 minutes until the crust is golden and cheese is bubbly. Slice into large wedges and serve hot — fold if you’re going for the true New York experience!
